St. Dominique Church - MALTA - h.20.00

Until recently, the average concertgoer could have been forgiven for knowing very little about Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644 -1704). His music cropped up only rarely in programmes. Occasionally, a violinist would play one of his sonatas, as the Bohemian-born Biber was one of the great violin virtuosos of his day. But the larger-scale music of one of Mozart’s most significant predecessors as Kapellmeister to the

court of the Archbishop of Salzburg (a post Biber held from 1684 until his death in

1704) went almost entirely unperformed.

Votivekirke - Wien

Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici referred to the fact that once again we are working towards exporting our culture. “This is another great opportunity to showcase the ability of Maltese artists in a central location which is visited by 600,000 Viennese people every year and thousands more of other locals and tourists which visit this Christmas Market, which is one of the largest Markets in Austria. This is all in line with our strategy to further strengthen culture diplomacy, whilst also providing a wider international platform to our artists.”

Richard Strauss“Divertimento” for Chamber Orchestra after Keyboard Pieces by Couperin, Op. 86

Andrea Gottardello “L’inquietudine di Pietro” Parafrasi on “Komm, Susses Kreuz” from “St Matthew Passion” by J.S. Bach

Karl Fiorini Ostinati

Gianfrancesco Malipiero La Cimarosiana.

Luigi Mancinelli Suite Sinfonica: “Scene veneziane”

The MPO returns to the VIBF performing a number a number of works – from the 19th century to contemporary compostions. Strauss’ work represents his artistic and expressive maturity, Mancinelli melodically depicts Venice’s Baroque splendour whereas Malipiero tributes eminent composer Cimarosa in his composition.

The two contemporary works by Gottardello and Fiorini, are inspired, in turn, by Bach’s monumental work and the ostinato – a trait of the Baroque era.
